写真は2025/10/19に訪れていた「福山城」天守閣。これは北側外観で、城の弱点とされ鉄板で外壁補強したという記録。
　家系史調査が進んで幕末期に差し掛かって写真のような江戸幕藩体制の象徴とわが家系のつながり・関連性にジワジワと匍匐前進してきたのです。まさかこの政変動乱とわが家系が関わっているなどとは思っていなかったが、昨日触れた幕末1856年の尾道港での「手船差し押さえ」事件でわが家系の「御用商家」ぶりが浮かび上がって、思わず身構えモードになった。
わたしには高校生時代、新左翼運動にのめり込んでいた「黒歴史」（笑）があるのですが、その人間の家系DNAが幕末明治期には幕藩体制保守側であったことが垣間見えてしまった。家系史調査で並行して幕末明治期の福山藩の動向を調べていて「長州征伐」に福山藩の軍派遣事実は当然発掘。
　そしてついに維新回天の年1868年１月に長州軍は福山藩に対し軍事侵攻したことがわかってくる。当時の最新鋭ミニエー銃武装軍団である長州軍の福山藩侵攻は以下のよう。
　明治維新直前の鳥羽・伏見の戦いで勝利した新政府軍（長州藩兵ら）は東征過程で幕府側の有力親藩であった福山藩を攻撃。長州軍は山陽道を進み福山藩領の福山市神辺町付近で戦闘が始まった。長州軍は新式銃器を装備して軍事力で圧倒。福山城の北西・三吉付近まで進出し城内に向けて大砲を撃ち込んだ。
　降伏と恭順。福山藩主・阿部正桓は長州軍の圧倒的な武力を前に抵抗を断念。藩を挙げて新政府軍に恭順を誓い城下は戦火を免れた。この一件により老中・阿部正弘を輩出した親藩・福山藩は徳川幕府側から離脱し新政府側として戊辰戦争（箱館戦争など）に参戦していく。
　経済・軍事の両面で極めて緊迫した状況。そして福山藩経済の生命線・松永塩田と今津の制圧。
　長州軍は尾道から進軍し山陽道の宿場町であり藩の重要な財源・松永塩田の枢要地・今津を占領。これは藩財政への脅威。塩の集散地である今津が抑えられたことは藩財政への致命的な打撃を意味した。藩の経済担当関係者は恐怖そのものだっただろう。当時の今津本陣・河本家やわが家系である御用商人、駐在の福山藩役人にとって、西洋式軍備を整えた長州軍の進駐はまさに財産と生命を脅かす恐怖そのものだった。

　The photo shows the main keep of Fukuyama Castle, visited on October 19, 2025. This is the north exterior, where records indicate the outer walls were reinforced with iron plates due to the castle’s perceived vulnerability.
As my family history research progressed into the Bakumatsu period, connections and relevance between my lineage and symbols of the Edo shogunate system, like this castle, gradually came into focus. I never imagined my family lineage could be connected to this era of political upheaval. Yet, yesterday’s mention of the 1856 “seizure of merchant ships” incident at Onomichi Port revealed my family’s role as a “government-approved merchant house,” instantly putting me on guard.
I have a “dark past” (laugh) from high school when I was deeply involved in the New Left movement, but now I’ve glimpsed that the DNA of that person’s lineage was on the conservative side of the Bakufu feudal system during the Bakumatsu and Meiji periods. While researching my family history, I was also investigating the movements of the Fukuyama domain during the Bakumatsu-Meiji period. Naturally, I uncovered the fact that Fukuyama domain sent troops to the “Choshu Expedition.”
And finally, I discovered that in January 1868, the year of the Meiji Restoration’s decisive turning point, the Choshu army launched a military invasion against Fukuyama domain. The invasion by the Choshu army, armed with the then-state-of-the-art Minié rifles, proceeded as follows:
　The new government forces (including Chōshū domain troops), victorious in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi just before the Meiji Restoration, attacked the Fukuyama domain—a powerful pro-shogunate domain—during their eastward campaign. The Chōshū army advanced along the Sanyō Road, and combat commenced near Kannabe Town in Fukuyama City, within Fukuyama domain territory. The Chōshū forces, equipped with modern firearms, overwhelmed the enemy militarily. They advanced to the vicinity of Miyoshi, northwest of Fukuyama Castle, and fired cannons into the castle.
Surrender and Submission. Faced with the overwhelming military might of the Chōshū forces, Fukuyama Domain’s lord, Abe Masatsune, abandoned resistance. The entire domain pledged submission to the new government forces, sparing the castle town from the ravages of war. This incident led the Fukuyama Domain, a loyal domain that had produced the senior councilor Abe Masahiro, to break away from the Tokugawa shogunate. It joined the new government side and participated in the Boshin War (including the Battle of Hakodate).
The situation was extremely tense both economically and militarily. Then came the seizure of Matsunaga Salt Fields and Imazu, the lifeline of the Fukuyama domain’s economy.
The Chōshū forces advanced from Onomichi, occupying Imazu—a post town on the Sanyō Road and a crucial hub for the domain’s vital revenue source, the Matsunaga Salt Fields. This posed a direct threat to the domain’s finances. Controlling Imazu, the salt distribution center, dealt a fatal blow to the domain’s finances. Those responsible for the domain’s economy must have been gripped by sheer terror. For the Kawamoto family, who ran the Imazu honjin (main inn) at the time, our family line of official merchants, and the resident Fukuyama domain officials, the advance of the Choshu army, equipped with Western-style military gear, was pure terror threatening their property and lives.
Oh, scary. Oppose the riot clubs. …
