[Strolling Through the Upper Reaches of the Ishikari River and Sounkyo]
As we grow older, we can enjoy a merry-go-round-like sense of wonder amidst the scenery. A glimpse into the Earth’s timeless environment prompts us to reflect calmly on the nature of human life. …
For elementary school students who grew up in Sapporo, school trips to the Sounkyo–Kitami–Abashiri region were the standard for our generation.
After visiting Kamikotan and the rivers in Asahikawa—which I posted about the other day—we took a bus trip further upstream along the Ishikari River. Since this was about 62 or 63 years ago, the journey with my classmates felt like a trip to a “heavenly realm” (laughs). Among all the sights, the “columnar jointing” at Sounkyo was particularly breathtaking; I was so struck by that natural formation that I felt as if I might faint.

I was truly amazed by the profound beauty of the landscape carved by the columnar jointing and the Ishikari River.
Sounkyo is a gorge formed by the weathering of rock—originally pyroclastic flow deposits solidified by high heat and pressure—which was then eroded by the Ishikari River. It features distinctive columnar jointing and the Niseicharomap River (one of the headwaters of the Ishikari River) flowing beneath it. I think seeing such a sight during the formative years of sixth grade left a deep imprint on my psyche.
Well, I suppose everyone’s reaction to it is different. In my case, I feel that I was deeply captivated by a sense of Earth-scale archaeology, and from then on, history became a major area of my “passion.” Perhaps it was this primordial landscape of columnar jointing that served as the backdrop for my reflections on human history, fostering a sense of timelessness and captivating my heart through the contrast with the passage of human time.

This image shows a map of the Ishikari River’s course. From the house on the west side of the Botanical Garden in Chuo Ward, Sapporo—where I grew up—I could see in the distance, far beyond the primeval forest, how the water vapor rising from the Ishikari River system was forming clouds unlike any others. On days when the weather caused those clouds to move quickly, it felt just like the march of “Godzilla,” a film that had left a deep impression on me.
I was deeply impressed to learn that the river’s headwaters contained such mind-boggling natural formations as columnar jointing.
…That boy is now entering his golden years. And every now and then, I get to enjoy road trips like this. It feels as if I’m riding a mysterious merry-go-round of life. I’ve been working on unearthing the “history” of my family lineage, but given this sense of “eternity,” 400 years in the human world must be but a fleeting moment. While the protagonists shift from ancestors to descendants, I’m strongly reminded that we are sustained by nature like this.
