[Comparing the \u201cHandwriting\u201d of My Father and a Sixth-Generation Ancestor: A 119-Year DNA Time Gap]
\nYesterday\u2019s post explored the study of \u201ccharacteristic handwriting,\u201d even going as far as Wang Xizhi. This led me to realize that analyzing handwriting could also be beneficial for genealogical research. …<\/p>\n

\u3000Lately, as part of my family history research, I\u2019ve been working on digitizing and archiving artifacts and documents left behind at my eldest brother\u2019s \u201cmain family home,\u201d and in the process, I\u2019ve come to realize the value of \u201chandwriting\u201d as a source of information.
\n\u3000In historical research, the basic approach is to unearth family traditions and public records to trace the vivid twists and turns of fate. I also verify gravestones in parallel, and family registers as well as the earliest copies of household registers from the late Edo and early Meiji periods serve as primary sources. On the other hand, since photographs only exist for people from the Meiji period onward, we cannot obtain definitive proof of events prior to that time. However, in some cases, written documents remain as traces left by our ancestors.
\n\u3000In my family lineage, the oldest surviving document is a scroll titled \u201cThe Origins of the Hara Clan,\u201d written in 1815 by my sixth-generation ancestor, Miki Kanzo. Meanwhile, as previously reported, a record believed to be my father\u2019s \u201chandwriting\u201d from my grandfather\u2019s funeral in 1934 was unearthed.
\n\u3000I believe authentic examples of my father\u2019s handwriting will eventually surface from correspondence or other records among his siblings, but\u2014unfortunately\u2014I do not have any in my possession. Therefore, for now, this serves as a candidate. As I mentioned earlier, the fact that this brought back a visceral sense of my close bond with my father made me realize that handwriting possesses a strong \u201celement of communication.\u201d
\n\u3000With that in mind, I decided to take advantage of the benefits of digitization and generate a side-by-side comparison of their handwriting\u2014a pair separated by 119 years in the DNA lineage\u2014as shown in the photo above.
\n\u3000While my understanding of my father\u2019s handwriting\u2014and even that of my ancestor six generations back\u2014is still incomplete, relying solely on oral tradition and my personal intuition, I\u2019ve come to believe this method could serve as a valuable \u201cmeans of exploration.\u201d
\n\u3000With the advancement of AI, it is said that the uniqueness of handwritten characters\u2014which is \u201cdeeply connected to humanity\u201d\u2014is actually gaining prominence as a major field of study. Upon investigation, I found that this is an area ill-suited for AI-based analysis. The following is reference information from AI sources.
\n\u3000~While printed text is symbolic information, handwriting is a highly pure, analog realm of human culture in which \u201cthe physicality, psychological state, and vital breath of the person at the very moment they wrote the character\u201d\u2014as reflected in pen pressure, speed, fluctuations in stroke, and the use of white space\u2014are directly captured. The moment you, as a child, see that \u201cquirky handwriting,\u201d you feel something that transcends the mere meaning of the words\u2014a sensation of directly connecting with your father\u2019s inner self and the presence he left behind. This is precisely the power of the \u201cbiometric information\u201d inherent in handwriting. ~ Hmm.
\nBased on this introduction, I have been carefully examining the subject with a focus on \u201ccomparison and contrast.\u201d<\/p>\n
