\nAn inscription by the \u201cSage of Calligraphy,\u201d transcending some 1,500 years of time. No way! As a Hokkaido resident, I felt a bit deflated after learning the truth. What should we do with it for future generations?…<\/p>\n

\u3000The other day, I happened to pass by \u201cOdori Park\u201d in downtown Sapporo.
\nSince I lived at what is now Kita 3-jo Nishi 11-chome in Chuo Ward, Sapporo, from the age of three until I was about 17, Odori Park is a public space that feels uniquely familiar to me. Its sense of spatial scale and the balance between walkways and green spaces\u2014details I hardly even notice\u2014have become part of my \u201cprimordial\u201d perception of space.
\n\u3000Even though it\u2019s a space like that, I don\u2019t remember every single detail in minute detail.
\nSo, when I happened to look up, my eyes were drawn to the \u201cPioneer Monument.\u201d My memory of it was merely a vague recollection from childhood\u2014something like, \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure a stone monument like this was here back then.\u201d Even upon seeing it again this time, my reaction was a casual, \u201cOh, right\u2014I guess I\u2019ll take a quick look.\u201d
\n\u3000That\u2019s when I noticed something: the character was written as \u201c\u7d00\u201d rather than \u201c\u8a18.\u201d You probably wouldn\u2019t notice something like this as a child. But looking closely, I felt a slight sense of unease about the way these characters were written\u2014or rather, the \u201ccompositional balance\u201d of the individual characters.
\nSo I read the explanation placed next to the pedestal. \u201cHuh? What? Wang Xizhi?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u3000As a child, I certainly wouldn\u2019t have recognized the name \u201cWang Xizhi.\u201d
\nIt wasn\u2019t until I developed a passing interest in history that I learned about the culture of Chinese characters and came to know his name as the \u201cSage of Calligraphy.\u201d As indicated by the inscriptions on the stone monument detailing the period in which he lived (303\u2013361), there is a time gap of more than 1,500 years between his era and the period of Hokkaido\u2019s settlement.
\n\u3000\u201cHuh? What does that mean?\u201d I found myself plunged into a labyrinth of temporal confusion, but the explanatory text finally clarified the circumstances: \u201cThe inscription was carved by \u2018selecting\u2019 five characters from Wang Xizhi\u2019s calligraphy.\u201d
\n\u3000Oh, so that\u2019s what it was all about.
\n\u3000Once I learned these \u201ccircumstances\u201d and took another look at the balance of the characters in the inscription, the mystery was solved\u2014but I couldn\u2019t help but feel a sense of \u201cinconsistency\u201d between the act of \u201cselecting\u201d those characters and the overall harmony of the piece.
\n\u3000I fully understand the sentiment behind creating a sort of \u201ccommemorative monument\u201d for the Meiji government\u2019s massive project of Hokkaido\u2019s settlement\u2014a national endeavor of which my own lineage is also a part. However\u2026 I also understand the desire to incorporate Wang Xizhi\u2019s calligraphy, but the sheer lack of balance leaves me with a sense of regret.
\n\u3000I\u2019ve come to deeply understand why this monument has not been widely passed down to the citizens of Sapporo or the people of Hokkaido to this day. We must face reality head-on.<\/p>\n
