\u3000Since returning to Sapporo from the Kansai region\u2014specifically my ancestral home in the Bingo Mountains\u2014I\u2019ve been so busy with various communications and scheduling appointments that I haven\u2019t been able to keep up with processing the massive amount of data I collected. Since I likely won\u2019t have many opportunities to visit that area again, and given the uncertainty surrounding the information I had about my grandmother beforehand, I went all out to gather every bit of relevant information I could find.
\n\u3000What I need to do now is \u201canalyze the data.\u201d I have no choice but to approach this as a \u201ctask that must be done\u201d and tackle it step by step. It\u2019s unclear whether this will even be needed for my grandchildren\u2019s generation (laughs), but I\u2019m approaching it as a duty of my generation. Still, it\u2019s taking quite a while\u2026
\n\u3000For that reason, I\u2019d like to shift the focus of my daily blog updates to more general topics for the time being.
\n\u3000Today, just like yesterday, I\u2019m in Sakai\u2014Rikyu\u2019s hometown\u2014so I\u2019ll continue this series as a mark of respect.
\n\u3000I\u2019ve lived my entire life completely detached from the culture of the tea ceremony and tea gatherings. Even so, I\u2019ve long been interested in the relationships that Sakai\u2019s wealthy merchants forged with the samurai government during that turbulent period of history. In particular, the drama surrounding Rikyu\u2014whose relationship with Hideyoshi became too intimate, leading to the tragic conclusion of being \u201cgranted death\u201d\u2014is etched into the Japanese psyche.
\n\u3000At \u201cRish\u014d no Mori,\u201d I was able to see the calligraphy that was displayed at the tea gathering held just before Rikyu\u2019s death.
\n\u3000Just as depicted in the drama, I can\u2019t help but think that Rikyu calmly accepted his impending death. This tea ceremony was held in the final days before his death.
\n\u3000~At the tea ceremony held in Tensh\u014d 18 (1590), a calligraphy piece by \u201cMaster Kokei\u201d was displayed. Kokei S\u014dchin (1532\u20131597), the 117th abbot of Daitoku-ji and known as Riky\u016b\u2019s Zen master, had a close relationship with Riky\u016b\u2014he even served as the presiding priest at the 50th anniversary memorial service for Riky\u016b\u2019s father.
\n\u3000In an era when calligraphy by eminent Chinese monks and Tang Dynasty paintings were highly revered, it was unusual to use the calligraphy of a living person. This suggests that Rikyu actively incorporated items that resonated with him into his own tea ceremonies. \u2026 according to the explanation.
