\n[Sakai, the Birthplace of the \u201cWay of Tea,\u201d Is a Melting Pot of Global Exchange]
\nSakai, often called the \u201cVenice of Japan,\u201d is also the holy land and pinnacle of tea ceremony culture. Perhaps this seemingly contradictory blend of environmental conditions is what makes it so \u201cJapanese\u201d…<\/p>\n

\u3000Well, my business in Osaka wrapped up on Saturday, so I spent one night in Sakai\u2014my home base in the Kansai region\u2014and returned home yesterday.
\n\u3000While waiting for my flight from Kansai International Airport, I spent some time at \u201cRish\u014d no Mori\u201d\u2014a place where I always learn so much\u2014doing some desk work and \u201ctidying up.\u201d The name \u201cRish\u014d no Mori\u201d comes from the memorial hall named after Sen no Riky\u016b and Yosano Akiko, both of whom were born in Sakai. It\u2019s located near Akiko Yosano\u2019s birthplace, close to \u201cOhama\u201d\u2014which she described in her poetry\u2014and the Sakai Lighthouse, and is imbued with the atmosphere of a city that once served as Japan\u2019s gateway during the Age of Discovery.
\n\u3000The photo above shows a mural painted on the exterior wall of a company facing the Sakai Lighthouse along the coastline\u2014a sight that lets you experience firsthand the city\u2019s atmosphere of openness to the world. I find this corporate philosophy particularly commendable.
\n\u3000When I consider that this is likely driven by Sakai\u2019s self-awareness as a primordial \u201cinternational city,\u201d I find it quite impressive.
\n\u3000The mural depicts Westerners disembarking from ships. Some of the figures even include \u201celephants.\u201d It vividly reflects their \u201cstrategic vision for international trade\u201d\u2014a form of communication that utilized \u201cexotic animals\u201d from a world they had never seen before as demonstration tools.
\n\u3000While these characteristics define Sakai, the city also possesses a regional identity that fostered \u201cJapanese aesthetic sensibility\u201d through the cultural phenomenon of the \u201ctea ceremony,\u201d a tradition that has been passed down to the present day.
\n\u3000The following is a quote from the exhibition commentary in the Rikyu Corner.
\n\u3000~A Mountain Retreat in the City: The townspeople of Sakai began to create the atmosphere of a mountain village within the narrow, densely packed city to host tea ceremonies. This was even considered superior to pure seclusion in the mountains and was called \u201ca mountain retreat in the city.\u201d The missionary Rodriguez recorded it as \u201cxicha no sankio\u201d and noted that it was a new style of tea ceremony that originated in Sakai. In the painting *Sumiyoshi Festival Procession*, which depicts the town of Sakai during the early modern period, a building that appears to be a thatched-hut-style tea room can also be seen. ~
\n\u3000I felt that this explanation hit upon a point I hadn\u2019t really noticed before. It is that core concepts of the tea ceremony, such as wabi-sabi, actually originated in Sakai\u2014the very epicenter of international exchange. The light is darkest under the lamp. The psychology of pursuing \u201cJapanese-ness\u201d in response to engagement with the world was born. Perhaps it was international exchange that made us conscious of \u201cWa\u201d (harmony).
\n\u3000And that insight led to the rediscovery of the \u201cauthenticity\u201d of Japan\u2019s natural landscapes and environments. I recently touched on Japan\u2019s miniature garden culture and Hokkaido\u2019s \u201chigh-insulation, high-airtightness\u201d housing culture, but this offers yet another perspective. Hmm.<\/p>\n
