\nWe are made to realize that the instinct to \u201cpass on our legacy to our grandchildren\u201d\u2014which we take for granted\u2014is actually the result of a revolution through which humanity has evolved in a way that sets us apart from other animals. …<\/p>\n

\u3000As I begin to participate in my grandchild\u2019s upbringing as a grandpa, I feel how much things have evolved since my own \u201cchild-rearing\u201d days.
\n\u3000Although it\u2019s only been a matter of a few decades, I\u2019m increasingly reminded of just how much human consciousness and ways of thinking have transformed.
\n\u3000Meanwhile, the diagram above is an exhibit that caught my interest at the \u201cHistory of Humankind\u201d exhibition at the National Museum of Nature and Science.
\n\u3000While it contrasts humans with typical mammals\u2014in this case, monkeys\u2014it makes me keenly aware of the difference in the process of \u201ccreating the next generation\u201d: whereas in most mammals, only dominant males can produce offspring, humans have evolved toward a \u201cmonogamous\u201d system. As illustrated in the figure, through the \u201cchain of life\u201d\u2014a sense of time defined by \u201cgenerations\u201d in which family bonds are passed down\u2014humans have brought forth and raised the next generation. This naturally led me to imagine how the sense of \u201cgoverning the world\u201d developed, and how the concept of \u201chistory\u201d simultaneously emerged from that process.
\n\u3000I felt as though I had clearly grasped the primordial form in which the phylogenetic understanding of \u201cgenealogy\u201d developed within humanity.
\n\u3000The sheer magnitude of the impact brought about by the \u201cgreat revolution\u201d of bipedalism is difficult for humanity\u2014the very participants in this revolution\u2014to fully grasp. I believe the key point is that humanity carried out a revolution in thought, shifting from the \u201cauthoritarian\u201d structures common throughout the animal kingdom to a more \u201cdecentralized and democratic\u201d consciousness.
\n\u3000The question of \u201cWhat is a human being?\u201d is a universal theme for humanity, and I believe literature constitutes one vast realm of inquiry into this question.
\nWhile I believe it\u2019s extremely important to delve into the realm of \u201cmental imagery\u201d as a way to decipher human nature in literature, I also feel it\u2019s perfectly natural to deepen our understanding through a phylogenetic approach.
\nThat, I suppose, is the realm of \u201chistory.\u201d And the realm of \u201cfamily history\u201d\u2014which lies closer to the very roots where that consciousness originated\u2014seems to me to be a vital tool in the exploration of human nature.
\n\u3000\u2026Well, I realize this might sound a bit self-serving\u2014perhaps I\u2019m reading too much into it (laughs)\u2014but when I\u2019m with my grandchild\u2019s smiling face, the world of imagination seems to come into view, and it\u2019s a joy. It\u2019s truly delightful to see the basis of the instinct\u2014\u201cto pass on life and wisdom to the next generation\u201d\u2014which humanity has nurtured over millions of years, become visible beyond words. \u2026<\/p>\n
