\nBoth those reporting on the achievements of the colonization efforts and the young Emperor Meiji, who received the report, connected through their shared experience of the Seikatei\u2019s architecture. I can only try to follow in their footsteps, however faintly. …<\/p>\n

\u3000Yesterday, since it was my grandson\u2019s first chance to experience Tadao Ando\u2019s architecture, I sent him to \u201cChildren\u2019s Book Forest: Sapporo Hokkaido University.\u201d I say \u201csent him\u201d because I left him in the care of my wife and my son\u2019s wife\u2014my grandson\u2019s mother\u2014while I went off on my own to revisit the Meiji-era \u201cSeikatei\u201d building in our neighborhood.
\n\u3000At \u201cChildren\u2019s Book Forest, Hokkaido University, Sapporo,\u201d they managed to secure one of the 20 same-day admission spots available each day. My grandson was apparently crawling around full of energy, bursting with joy at getting to experience Ando\u2019s architecture (laughs). This doting grandpa is happy too. I heard his eyes kept darting around during the picture book reading session, but well, he\u2019s got a long road ahead of him. Take your time and don\u2019t rush\u2014reading is a long-term endeavor that runs almost parallel to a person\u2019s entire life. A six-month-old infant can\u2019t actually \u201cread,\u201d but reading possesses a certain dignity and atmosphere as a culture that has sustained human society. To \u201csoak in\u201d that with every fiber of one\u2019s being is truly wonderful. I have the deepest respect for Mr. Ando\u2019s philosophy.
\nSo, since I was the designated driver and couldn\u2019t join them, I headed to Seikatei, shown in the photo.
\n\u3000I\u2019d previously written about this building on my blog as an example of \u201carchitecture from the formative period of Hokkaido\u2019s settlement,\u201d and since restoration work seemed to have recently been completed\u2014and it\u2019s only about a five-minute walk away\u2014I decided to revisit it. I believe that on this first visit, one can sense the passion that Emperor Meiji poured into the development of Hokkaido.
\n\u3000I have deep respect for the vibrant creativity of the Meiji state that was poured into the pioneering efforts, and for the Emperor\u2019s earnest desire to visit the land as soon as possible. This spirit lies at the very foundation of us Hokkaido residents. The pavilion was built within \u201cKairakuen,\u201d which was developed as a \u201cresting place\u201d and Hokkaido\u2019s first \u201cpark\u201d during the Emperor\u2019s inaugural visit. Historically, it is a fact that Emperor Meiji spent some time at this facility.<\/p>\n

\u3000It is said to have been built with Hokkaido-grown timber to showcase the progress of the region\u2019s development.
\n\u3000Inside, too, the spirit behind the project comes through in details such as the ceiling planks made from large-diameter Hokkaido timber.
\n\u3000However, what truly moved me was the fact that even the stepping stones where the Emperor walked were made from \u201cIshiyama Soft Stone,\u201d a locally sourced material. So, I went to a factory to buy Ishiyama soft stone to use as \u201cstepping stones\u201d in front of my own home\u2019s entrance, and I\u2019ve laid three 60\u00d730 cm slabs there.
\n\u3000Personally, this made me aware of the connection between my own passion for history and the fact that I\u2019ve spent my life involved in architecture. A refreshing confession about copying. \u2026<\/p>\n
