\u3000Regarding my genealogical research, I\u2019ve just wrapped up the most recent phase of fieldwork and literature review as of yesterday.
\n\u3000I\u2019ve been studying the *History of Ibara City* in Okayama Prefecture to investigate and verify the actual state of economic exchange between \u201cpost stations\u201d during the Edo period, and I\u2019ve largely completed the verification process for the relevant sections. Now it\u2019s time to move on to the analysis phase. My family\u2019s ancestral home is \u201cImazu,\u201d located east of Onomichi, which served as a post station on the Sanyo Road. During the late Edo period, our family sustained itself through economic activities centered on the local industry, the \u201cMatsunaga Salt Fields.\u201d
\n\u3000To the east of Imazu along the Sanyo Road was \u201cKannabe,\u201d and beyond that lay \u201cIbara,\u201d part of the Okayama Domain. We had established connections with influential families in that area.
\n\u3000The work itself is progressing smoothly, but there\u2019s one thing that just won\u2019t let me go: the place names.
\n\u3000This \u201cIbara\u201d is part of a region known as \u201cShitsuki\u201d since the Meiji era.
\n\u3000This district name appears repeatedly in the documents, but I just can\u2019t get used to it (sigh). I think that when a pronunciation resonates in our minds, a sense of familiarity arises, allowing us to organize and make sense of things.
\n\u3000However, even after learning that \u201cShitsuki\u201d is the reading for \u201c\u5f8c\u6708,\u201d it just won\u2019t resonate with me.
\n\u3000I simply can\u2019t get a sense of the place or feel at home there. Yet in my family history research, this region is a crucial focal point for my relationships with the people there, spanning from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji era and beyond. It\u2019s also my grandmother\u2019s \u201cbirthplace,\u201d so unearthing the family traditions there is of the utmost importance. That\u2019s why I\u2019m planning to visit the area soon.
\n\u3000There are place names in Hokkaido\u2014such as \u201cShiri\u201d (from \u201cShiribeshi\u201d and \u201cShiribetsu\u201d)\u2014where the character \u201c\u5f8c\u201d is read as \u201cshiri,\u201d so it\u2019s not as if I don\u2019t understand the concept at all. Such a \u201creading\u201d likely existed as an archaic form of Japanese.
