\u3000This weekend feels like a \u201cprelude\u201d to the Obon holiday\u2014how is everyone spending their time?
\nSince \u201cMountain Day\u201d is a holiday on the 11th, even though we have to go to work on the 10th in between, it seems like a long summer vacation is taking hold across the country. For seniors like me who are semi-retired, it feels like we\u2019re just going through the motions to keep up with the rest of society.
\nI imagine there will be more opportunities to meet with \u201crelatives,\u201d and all sorts of \u201cprivate conversations\u201d will be in full swing.
\n\u3000Prompted by this realization, I\u2019ve been revisiting my personal photo album documenting my final stop on my \u201cExploring All of Japan\u2019s Prefectures\u201d journey\u2014Oita Prefecture\u2014a project I\u2019d forgotten about for a while. In fact, I recalled how I was secretly impressed when I noticed the room name \u201cNaisho\u201d listed on the floor plan of this traditional Oita house, the \u201cGoto Family Residence,\u201d located in the Nozuhara district of Oita City.
\n\u3000The photo and floor plan above show that traditional house. It turns out that \u201cNaisho\u201d actually means \u201csleeping quarters\u201d\u2014a room designated solely for the family to sleep in. Still, the name \u201cNaisho\u201d is quite apt. It certainly seemed like the perfect place for family members to whisper candidly to one another, sharing their true feelings without holding back: \u201cYou know that person\u2026 just a little\u2026\u201d \u201cYeah, yeah, I know, I know (laughs).\u201d Did a certain Japanese sense of humor get reflected in the room\u2019s name, or did the colloquial usage actually stem from the origin of the name?
\n\u3000I got the feeling it was somewhere in between.
\n\u3000For reference, here\u2019s an explanation I found online:
\n\u3000~ The etymology of \u201cnaisho\u201d comes from the Buddhist term \u201cnaish\u014d\u201d (\u5185\u8a3c) \/ achieving deep enlightenment solely within oneself. …The evolution of the word: \u201cinvisible or unknown to others\u201d \u21d2 \u201ca secret not revealed to the outside world.\u201d Kanji adaptation: Later, the characters for \u201c\u5185\u7dd2\u201d (naisho) were assigned to it. ~That\u2019s what it said.
\n\u3000However, lately I\u2019ve been wanting to engage in a multi-layered dialogue by \u201cpoking fun\u201d at AI, so when I cited this \u201creal-life example from Oita Prefecture\u201d to probe further, I received the following response.
\n\u3000~Interestingly, the meaning of a room called \u201cNaisho\u201d varies slightly by region. While in some areas, such as Oita Prefecture, it often refers to the family \u201cliving room\u201d or a couple\u2019s \u201cbedroom,\u201d in places like the Goto Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture, it refers to the \u201cplace where cooking is done (kitchen).\u201d In all cases, however, they are completely consistent in that they represent \u201cthe hidden side of daily life, concealed from guests\u2019 eyes.\u201d~ I proudly presented this subtle \u201cdeep dive\u201d with a smug look on my face (lol).
\n\u3000It\u2019s fascinating to consider what psychological dynamics were at play when family members used this room name among themselves, and what impressions visitors formed when they heard it.<\/p>\n
