\nImpressive primeval forests and rivers. The scenery my grandfather’s family saw when they crossed into Hokkaido. Back then, a wooden bridge even spanned this Horomui River. A sense of \u201cbeing far away\u201d…<\/p>\n

\u3000Though still quite energetic, I’ve begun to distance myself somewhat from the front lines of work, and my mind is increasingly drawn to confirming the roots of my family lineage, something that has long been on my mind.
\nMy family migrated to Hokkaido in 1905 from what is now Fuchu City, adjacent to Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture. With reliable records from the Edo period available, I occasionally visit the cemetery where my ancestors rest. The temple housing that cemetery and its neighboring influential family operated the \u201chonjin\u201d (official inn) designated by the Satsuma domain at the Edo-period \u201cImazu-juku\u201d post station. They spent the Edo period as a merchant family serving that role.
\n\u3000Thus, they journeyed all the way from Hiroshima Prefecture to Hokkaido. The term \u201ccrossing to Hokkaido\u201d (\u6e21\u9053) may be unfamiliar to those outside Hokkaido, but it corresponds to the concept of \u201cgoing to Tokyo\u201d (\u4e0a\u4eac). For Japanese people, \u201ccrossing the sea\u201d carries a special sentiment, and this expression embodies that psychology. Indeed, when my grandfather’s family arrived in Hokkaido, that impression must have been profound.
\n\u3000Initially, it wasn’t about pioneering settlement. They came to this location, now Kurisawa Town in Iwamizawa City, relying on a successful settler they knew from Hiroshima Prefecture who had become a large landowner. They built a house here and planned to start a business. It seems they were aiming to make their fortune. This photo shows the place where they built their house and lived at that time.
\n\u3000As you can see, the residential area now bears no resemblance to its former self, having reverted to natural forest. Located where the Horomukai River meanders, they reportedly operated a \u201cwatermill\u201d using the river’s flow as a sideline during the settlement period. It provided \u201cmechanical power\u201d for the agricultural industry in this region around 1905. Indeed, given this location and the surrounding circumstances, it makes perfect sense. …
\nThat said, while starting to \u201cjot down\u201d this theme on my blog provides a psychological trigger, it’s still too heavy a subject for daily updates. Moving forward, I hope to touch on it fragmentarily, paired with images.
