\u3000My daily walks keep me active, averaging just over 10,000 steps.
\n\u3000My wife, dragged along by me, started \u201cwalking together\u201d last October to lose weight and has made it a habit. She was beaming yesterday, saying she was amazed at how active our friends were throughout our recent trip to Korea.
\nWalking really is a fundamental human activity and the source of vitality, I think.
\nSo, I choose walking routes nearby to \u201cboost motivation.\u201d The photo shows the 6-meter-wide sidewalk on one side of Kotoni Main Street, where I walk often lately. The opposite side has an identical sidewalk, making it incredibly easy to walk. The section from the intersection with the old Route 5 to JR Kotoni Station is about 1km, taking 10-15 minutes on foot. It’s a well-maintained, \u201cmain artery\u201d sidewalk that’s very walkable and bustling with many pedestrians.
\n\u3000While walking here the other day, just as I turned to cross over to the similar sidewalk on the opposite side from the crosswalk, I nearly collided with a bicycle speeding past me from behind. A powerful gust of wind hit my right side directly. I stood there stunned, unable to move.
\nThe reckless cyclist sailed past me, riding away at breakneck speed, looking completely unfazed.<\/p>\n

\u3000I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if, in such a situation, a pedestrian and a cyclist collided violently.
\nThe law naturally states that pedestrians have priority, but no matter how you read it, the \u201cpenalty provisions\u201d for cyclists raise questions. Or rather, the identification of responsibility as the perpetrator is far too lax. With automobiles, it’s easy to identify the \u201coffender\u201d through driver’s licenses and vehicle registration regulations, but for bicycles, it’s extremely lax. It seems like even if a serious accident occurs, it would be easy to \u201cget away with it.\u201d
\nGiven this, when I asked around, it seems quite a few accidents actually happen.
\nI myself have witnessed scenes where cyclists approaching head-on from the opposite direction, seeing multiple elderly people walking slowly, would press forward with expressions like \u201cGet out of the way, you guys.\u201d Terrifying.
\nGiven these dangerous situations, isn’t the right to \u201cself-defense\u201d recognized for pedestrians? Must pedestrians simply submit to danger?

Also. Yesterday, heavy rain continued into the night, making visibility extremely poor on Sapporo city roads. For over ten minutes, a cyclist wearing what appeared to be racing gear \u2013 completely clad in black, making them nearly invisible \u2013 rode alongside my car. He repeatedly changed lanes, making it a maximum danger situation from the driver’s perspective. As a driver, I always prioritize safety above all else, but still…<\/p>\n
