To achieve this goal, I visited Jinseki Kogen Town in Hiroshima Prefecture, a mountainous region located on the border between Hiroshima and Okayama Prefectures, in order to obtain family register records dating back to the Bakumatsu and Meiji periods, when Japan\u2019s family registration system was established.
\n\u3000To tell the truth, until I actually arrived here, I didn\u2019t even know this place was in \u201cHiroshima Prefecture\u201d (!). Nor did I realize it was a truly \u201cmountainous region.\u201d It really is true that people cannot understand the true nature of a place unless they go there in person. I truly felt that it is only when you arrive on the spot that the \u201cbig picture\u201d\u2014including all the spatial context\u2014becomes clear.
\n\u3000I was deeply struck by the realization that it is only by synthesizing the entire environment\u2014from the nature that envelops us to the traces of human society\u2014that a genuine \u201cway of life\u201d first becomes visible.
