\u3000This is an archival photograph of the Emperor\u2019s radio address announcing the end of the war on August 15, 1945.
\nRecent global events have made me acutely aware that \u201cthe world is falling apart.\u201d World War II ended with Japan\u2019s defeat, and from that point on, the \u201cpostwar world\u201d\u2014the era in which I was born\u2014began. Yet it seems to me that this postwar world is now, in many ways, falling apart.
\n\u3000While the pretense of \u201cUN-centeredism\u201d has been bandied about naively, the organization\u2019s current lack of presence has completely exposed the hypocrisy of that notion. It has been laid bare for all to see that the United States has absolutely no respect for the UN or the WHO.
\nIt might be out of place for someone like me to touch on such topics.
\n\u3000However, the situation surrounding Iran is symbolic of the current world, and with U.S. President Trump\u2014leader of the world\u2019s most powerful military\u2014scheduled to visit China on May 14\u201315, major developments are expected depending on the outcome of their talks. This time, U.S. Treasury Secretary Vessent visited Japan, and preliminary \u201ccoordination\u201d between Japan and the U.S. has already taken place.
\nI believe we are at a critical juncture where several \u201cscenarios\u201d are conceivable.
\n\u3000…Under these circumstances, it has suddenly occurred to me that Japan\u2014which achieved postwar reconstruction by \u201cenduring the unendurable,\u201d as stated in the Emperor\u2019s radio address\u2014served as a kind of \u201cfoundation\u201d for the postwar world. It was only because Japan endured the unendurable, even after having atomic bombs dropped on it, that the postwar world could emerge.
\nIs it possible for Iran, which currently lacks a \u201csupreme leader,\u201d to respond in the same way Japan did back then?
\n\u3000The Chinese Communist Party has become rigid in its hardline stance toward Japan\u2014a stance it brought upon itself\u2014but deep down, I suspect it is desperate to impose on other nations, as a dictatorship, the very \u201cenduring the unendurable\u201d that Japan demonstrated in its dealings with the United States.
\nIn contrast, Japanese society is responding with a fundamentally calm demeanor. It is a mature, level-headed approach that avoids direct confrontation and maintains a measured course. I believe this is the correct strategy.
\n\u3000In contrast, the global community is beginning to recognize the abnormality of the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s stance.
\nNow, how the situation will unfold from here is a phase that the world\u2014and people of all walks of life\u2014will need to keep a close eye on.<\/p>\n
