\u3000I believe my grandmother is \u201cconnected\u201d to about a quarter of my DNA. I was born to my parents, but they, in turn, were born to their respective grandparents. It\u2019s the cycle of life.
\nWhile the intensity of one\u2019s \u201cfeelings\u201d likely varies depending on one\u2019s background, in my case, I hadn\u2019t really thought deeply about my grandmother until I reached this age. It\u2019s true that I continue to feel a strong \u201csense of connection to life\u201d regarding my parents, but since I had little direct contact with my grandparents, that\u2019s likely the reason for the difference. I lost my grandmother when I was two years old, so I have no vivid memories of her.
\nSince my second older brother tasked me with \u201ccarrying on\u201d the family\u2019s research into our lineage\u2019s \u201cpast lives,\u201d and because I am obedient to the order of seniority, I have been gradually confronted with our family\u2019s heirlooms and traditional artifacts one after another.
\n\u3000The photo shows three \u201cdedicated sutras\u201d from the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, discovered among the heirlooms preserved at my eldest brother\u2019s home.
\nThis Shikoku pilgrimage likely occupies a very important place in the collective imagination of the Japanese people. As for myself, I\u2019m more of a \u201cpretend\u201d type. I love Shikoku and have \u201ctoured\u201d it four or five times on family trips, but my experience is limited to staying at the guest quarters of Anrakuji Temple (the 10th temple) and being allowed to explore the \u201cmandala-like\u201d secret area behind the main hall.
\nWhen I\u2019m shown items like these in the photo\u2014where \u201ccharms\u201d from each pilgrimage temple have been carefully recorded and preserved\u2014I feel as though I\u2019m being shown a kind of personal \u201cdignity.\u201d
\n\u3000…And so, in addition to my grandmother\u2019s \u201cdedicated sutra\u201d in the lower row, I find myself staring intently at the two items in the photo above.
\nWhile I can tell that both are from \u201cImazu, Numakuma District, Fukuyama Domain, Bingo Province\u201d\u2014where my family lived for generations\u2014I simply cannot place the ancestors with the given names \u201cKy\u014dhei\u201d and \u201cFusakichi\u201d listed below them. Tenp\u014d 15 is 1844, and Kaei 4 is 1851. Even though this is one of the heirlooms our family has preserved, I cannot connect it to the names of its owners.
\nA \u201cmystery\u201d that suddenly appeared amidst the brilliant light.
\nOne possible interpretation is that they were a branch family that supported the \u201cAgaya\u201d merchant house\u2014which was not the main line inheriting the family headship\u2014in its day-to-day operations, or perhaps they were \u201cservants.\u201d
\n\u3000I find myself pondering this deeply. …However, looking on the bright side, I can only take this as a gentle admonishment from my grandmother, sighing, \u201cYou still have a long way to go,\u201d urging me to try harder. …Well then.<\/p>\n
