\u3000Lately, my schedule seems to be getting a bit double-booked. Just yesterday, after I got a message saying my son\u2019s wife was coming over with my grandchild around noon, a friend invited me out for lunch. Something similar happened the day before yesterday, too\u2014it\u2019s just\u2026
\n But as someone who\u2019s a total \u201cdoting grandpa,\u201d I just can\u2019t resist my grandchild (lol).
\n\u3000He\u2019s only three months old, but my wife, who\u2019s been helping out, is starting to feel the muscle strain. So, I\u2019ve stepped in as the dedicated \u201ccuddle specialist,\u201d joining them in a sort of \u201cshared destiny\u201d partnership.
\nThat said, I always have fun \u201ctalking\u201d with this grandson. Of course, he (a boy) can\u2019t understand or speak words yet, but I just keep talking to him one-sidedly. Whether he understands or not is beside the point; my hope is that the fact Grandpa is talking happily will \u201cget through\u201d to him, even just a little, in the depths of his being. So, I\u2019m actually telling him things like, \u201cListen, when you grow up, make sure you read this book by Yutaka Haniya\u2014especially the part about \u2018The Dead Man\u2019s Phone Booth,\u2019 that\u2019s a must-read\u201d (lol).
\n\u3000Then, my grandson turned three months old, and the moment I picked him up, he gave me a little smile (lol).
\nI suppose his expression was saying, \u201cOh, Grandpa\u2019s being weird again.\u201d As for me, I felt like I was floating on air\u2026
\nThat\u2019s the kind of \u201cconversation\u201d we have. I happened to pick up the photo collection of Shiko Munakata\u2019s works and flipped through the pages with him. I\u2019m a huge Shiko Munakata fan, and I\u2019ve visited the memorial museum in Aomori City about twice. Unfortunately, the museum has since closed. I expect this remaining collection of his works will eventually become a valuable treasure.
\nI believe that artists from northern Tohoku\u2014whether it\u2019s Kenji Miyazawa or Shiko Munakata\u2014enjoy an extremely high level of popular appreciation, rather than the kind of \u201cauthoritative\u201d recognition they might get in Tokyo. I see it as a kind of \u201cfolk art\u201d fetish, so to speak. So, I\u2019m trying to give my three-month-old grandson a deep analysis, saying things like, \u201cThis woman\u2019s expression is as gentle as your mom\u2019s, isn\u2019t it? What do you think?\u201d (laughs). He stares at me with a puzzled look. \u201cOh, maybe he\u2019s getting it\u2026\u201d\u2014and so I, Grandpa, am completely immersed in a sea of misunderstanding.
\n\u3000I have a passion for visiting memorial halls dedicated to local artists and creators in various regions, and I find the catalogs and publications I purchase there to have significant historical value. I\u2019m hoping my grandson will develop that same passion as well. …<\/p>\n
