\nWith winter turning to spring, I scouted out Hokkaido University’s grounds\u2014perfect for my \u201cbrown bear avoidance\u201d walks. The great spotted woodpecker gave me a reluctant welcome, like, \u201cYou again? Get lost already (lol).\u201d …<\/p>\n

\u3000This photo shows the newer section of Hokkaido University’s poplar tree-lined avenue in central Sapporo.
\nHokkaido University is famous for its poplar trees, but the original avenue from the university’s founding was closed to the public due to the risk of falling trees. This newer section was cultivated about 1 km north of that area.
\n\u3000Late last year, as brown bears became increasingly active in Sapporo’s Maruyama area, I shifted my daily walking route for safety reasons. This made me realize the location advantage of Hokkaido University’s grounds. Situated in the city center and surrounded by major roads on all sides, nature is well-protected here, and I judged the risk of bear encounters to be low. Since around early autumn, I’ve been driving there and back to use it as my walking route.
\n\u3000Once winter arrived and the brown bears naturally went into hibernation, we felt safe enough to return to our original walking routes around Sapporo’s Maruyama area and the urban neighborhoods near our home.
\nWith March bringing significant snowmelt, I decided to take a preliminary look at the Hokkaido University campus grounds.
\n\u3000The snow had vanished from the paths where Hokkaido University students usually walk, making it very easy to stroll. Around this poplar tree-lined path, a bird that seemed like a great tit appeared to have taken up residence. It was chirping loudly, as if saying, \u201cOh, you’re back again? Get lost already.\u201d Seems I’m not exactly popular here, maybe even a nuisance (laugh).
\n…Well, it’s still pleasantly nostalgic.
\n\u3000Back in my youth, this Hokkaido University campus\u2014or rather, the area around the Clark statue\u2014was where my childhood friends and I would venture for play. So, this \u201cold Sapporo\u201d kind of scenery and atmosphere is soothing. The campus buildings also seem to be mostly quite old, which really stirs up nostalgia. As you get older, you become strongly drawn to this kind of \u201catmosphere,\u201d don’t you? I even made a friend at the Hokkaido University Library, so this year I plan to actively enjoy walks and other activities here.
\n\u3000Now, on the other hand, with the snowmelt season upon us, last year’s brown bear incidents are likely to resurface again this year. The Ministry of the Environment seems to be rolling out various countermeasures, but I hope for efforts to clearly \u201cdemarcate\u201d the living spaces between humans and brown bears. I look forward to urban environments where people can enjoy walks with peace of mind, not just at Hokkaido University.<\/p>\n
