\nThe other day, while shopping at a roadside station in Hokkaido, I noticed several large buses in the parking lot. I had a feeling about it, and sure enough, a line had formed at the checkout counter. At the register, someone who appeared to be from a certain country was taking a 1,000-yen bill out of their wallet, but they couldn’t communicate the amount with the clerk, causing an unnecessary delay.
\n\u3000Thinking \u201cWell, can’t be helped,\u201d I joined the line to wait. Then, a middle-aged woman who appeared to be from a certain country rudely cut right in front of me. It was such an blatant nuisance that I called out to her, but she either completely ignored me or was determined not to listen at all.
\nI called out several times, but she remained as unyielding as iron.
\n\u3000Finally, the cashier moved the person holding the 1,000-yen bill sideways, skipping the cut-in woman and calling me forward as the next customer. To the cut-in woman, the cashier gestured with her body, signaling \u201cPlease go to the back of the line.\u201d The woman stood there stiffly, wearing an expression that clearly said, \u201cWhat the hell?\u201d Is this person here in Japan determined to thoroughly \u201cdisparage\u201d the country’s culture? Or is it a case of refusing to embrace the local culture even when in the country?
