\u3000Woke up today to find a notification from Facebook saying I’d earned a \u201cNew Talent\u201d badge.
\nMy brain reacted with, \u201cHuh? I’m not exactly \u2014I’m a pre-elderly person…\u201d but apparently it means I fit their criteria as a blog writer. Grateful for that. Just thought I’d share.
\n\u3000And so, today once again, it’s an exploration of bringing past times into real-time through \u201ccolorization.\u201d
\nThe photos are from the Hokkaido University Library collection titled \u201cArchitecture of Colonies and Immigrant Settlements.\u201d I attempted to colorize these monochrome images to capture the atmosphere of that era, along with the original images.
\n\u3000During this late Meiji period, my family lineage\u2014my grandfather\u2014settled in Kurisawa, on the outskirts of Iwamizawa City, Hokkaido. Naturally, \u201cphotographs\u201d from that era were taken only by a handful of specialized photographers who brought their own equipment. So, my family has absolutely no such inherited photographs. However, the historical context and the atmosphere of the \u201ccolony (settlement)\u201d seem almost identical.
\n\u3000My family settled there as a small household: my grandfather and grandmother in their early 30s, and two young children. When building their dwelling (too DIY and simple to call it a house), it’s reasonable to assume they received help from neighbors, much like in this photo.
\nFor the migration, they reportedly used connections to existing Hokkaido settlers with ties to their hometown region of Bingo, Hiroshima Prefecture. So, scenes like this were likely common. The probability is extremely high.
\nStaring intently at the black-and-white photo, I notice a young child being carried on someone’s back. The child’s legs are faintly colored, powerfully stirring my emotions. In my own family, my aunt as a child must have been carried like this. It feels as if the information conveyed by the photo suddenly becomes deeply personal.
\n\u3000The real-time sense of late Meiji-era migration to Hokkaido presses in.
\nYet even so, a simple house built with a \u201csmall frame\u201d in the warm regions of Honshu.
\nThe hardships endured by the bloodline who began living in such huts in the bitter cold of Hokkaido deeply move me.<\/p>\n
