\nThis is a pivotal region where the time of Japanese history has been passed all the way to the present day. Hokkaido people are continually reminded of and healed by the various \u201csenses of time\u201d. Hokkaido<\/p>\n

\u3000I returned Monday night from a tour of the Kobe-Himeji-Sanyo Province area, but it will take some time to organize the large number of photos I have to take. I know that everyone’s life is different, but in my case, wandering from place to place seems to be in my nature. I think my attitude toward life is to respect the atmosphere of the land and the local air that it produces.
\n\u3000Nevertheless, as a citizen of Hokkaido and Sapporo, I continue to be amazed by Himeji’s stacked history. The illustration above shows the government offices of the \u201cnational government\u201d located in Himeji during the Nara period (710-794). From the beginning of the gradual spread of central power in this country throughout the nation, Harima remained an important center as a major power. The director-general and vice-ministers dispatched from the central government administered local government affairs, and the area must have been bustling with activity commensurate with the size of the country. Many people must have been working, such as laborers and laborers who followed the government officials. The earthen walls shown in the illustration would have been used as public buildings to visualize and recognize the political power system in an easy-to-understand manner. The first official document, \u201cFudoki of Harima Province,\u201d was compiled in this kokufu.
\n\u3000The location of the provincial government office was near the Sanyo Expressway, the main artery of transportation in this period. Politics and economy of the period were vividly conducted in this area.<\/p>\n

\u3000The illustration here, on the other hand, shows the economic transactions that took place in the vicinity of this center of political power. The \u201cmarket\u201d named \u201cShikama\u201d still retains its name to this day, where a variety of goods were traded. The city’s fame as a market was also well known in the capital, and the name \u201cShikama-shi\u201d appears in Sei Shonagon’s \u201cThe Pillow Book,\u201d a work of literature by the imperial court scholar Sei Shonagon. The city was also known for Kachi-zome, a specialty of Harima. The name of the river \u201cIchigawa\u201d (meaning \u201ccity river\u201d in Japanese) is said to have come from the fact that the river flowed near the city of Shikama.
\n\u3000Harima, the region closest to the Kinai region, has always played a central role in Japanese history as an important political and economic region. Today, the region’s history can be accessed from Hokkaido in about two hours by air. In addition, various kinship relationships with this region have been unearthed, and this \u201csense of connection\u201d is something that I find endearing.
